The meniscus is a C- shape structure inside the knee, composed of fibrocartilaginous tissue. A meniscus tear is often a source of knee pain caused either by one abrupt trauma or by repetitive, degenerative micro-traumas. In some cases the torn meniscus can be sutured arthroscopically, though in many the torn part of the meniscus must be removed arthroscopically.
Cartilage is found all around the knee structure. An injury to the cartilage can happen by trauma or by progressive deterioration with age, the latter known as osteoarthritis. Depending on the size and location of the injury, different surgical treatment options can be applied.
Arthritis or Osteoarthritis
If arthritis or osteoarthritis is at an advanced stage, knee replacement is recommended. In early stages of arthritis, hyaluronic acid injections can greatly help alleviate pain. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the synovial fluid of every joint and serves as lubricant in the joint. Injected into a knee with osteoarthritis, hyaluronic acid can cure the pain and nurture the cartilage.
